Montgomery Academy won its third straight state championship and seventh in nine years with Friday's 2-1 win over Southside-Gadsden in Huntsville.

The Eagles, after winning the 1A-3A title the last two years, stepped up to 4A-5A this season.

Hayes Jenkins and Brooke Horne scored off Tara Katz's assists, while Millie Stevenson made 10 saves.

MA (22-3-1) won its five playoff games by a combined score of 30-4.

The Eagles also made some multi-sport history.

MA came within a girls basketball championship loss of pulling off an unprecedented AHSAA volleyball-girls basketball-girls soccer Triple Crown.

Two players were on the rosters of all three teams: senior Margaret Head and junior Millie Stevenson.

The Eagles marked just the fourth time a school has won two of those sports and reached the semifinals in the third.

MA did it in 2013-14, while Briarwood did it in 1996-97 and 1997-98. All three won volleyball and soccer but lost in the basketball semifinals.

Only 1994-95 Hazel Green has pulled off a volleyball-girls basketball-softball Triple Crown.

Montgomery Academy has 72 AHSAA championships in all sports, including eight in girls soccer. The Eagles have four championships this school year, matching their total from the last three years combined.

MA's volleyball, girls basketball and soccer teams combined for a 93-14-1 record this season.
