Lower School STEM Lab
Summary of the Position: The Montgomery Academy Lower School focuses on the development of the whole child. Our STEM lab serves students in Grades K-4 and lays the foundation for the work that students will do in the Middle School and Upper School STEM classes. We are seeking an individual to encourage a sense of wonder and curiosity in students, design experiential learning, and cultivate enthusiasm for STEM-related topics. This position may be filled during the 2023-2024 school year or in August of 2024.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Design and teach experiential STEM classes that reflect current best practices including instruction in design thinking, 3D printing, coding, and age-appropriate dissection
- Use the Responsive Classroom approach to classroom management
- Provide students with specific, actionable feedback and grades
- Communicate with parents proactively, positively, and professionally to support the academic, social-emotional, and physical needs of students
- Collaborate with both the Lower School enrichment team and the MA STEM Department (K-12)
- Help plan and implement annual interdisciplinary events (i.e. STEAMfest, the culture study, the author visit)
- Assist on STEM-related field trips as needed
- Oversee the 4th grade STEM lab helper program and the Lower School garden and chicken coop
- Actively engage in the school’s process of process growth and development
- Perform other duties to support the division and/or school as a whole
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in elementary education or STEM-related field
- Substantial classroom teaching experience preferred
- Master’s degree preferred
- Experience using technology to enhance learning preferred
- Experience with project-based learning and design thinking preferred
