Head of School Bookshelf

As the year draws to a close, I always enjoy looking back at the books that I have read over the course of the past year.  While the “busy-ness” of life (namely the excitement surrounding the arrival of a new baby) prevented me from reading as much this year as I have in years past, I would certainly say that reading is one of my great joys.  As Emily Dickinson’s simple, but powerful, poem reminds us, “there is no frigate like a book.”  By reading, we are exposed to stories and experiences that we may never be able to experience in our own lives, and we are transported to locations that we might never encounter. Reading expands our capacity for empathy, and it expands the basis of our knowledge.  I read for personal and professional development, and, thankfully, I find both types of reading to be extremely enjoyable!

The Pursuit of What?

Taken from John McWilliams' remarks to the student body at Convocation in August 2019.

I think about it every single day as I approach my work at the school. Students, we even talk about it in faculty meetings as I remind our faculty, staff and administration that "the pursuit applies to all of us."

Even before the founding of our student community service organization H.E.A.R.T. (Helping Eagles Are Right There) in the 1990s, MA has maintained a focus over the years on serving the Montgomery community.

What I'm Reading

I want to share some of the books that have been on my bookshelf over the course of the fall semester. I hope that some of you might be interested in some of these books, and if you do happen to pick up one of these books, let's be sure to engage in a conversation! Regardless of whether these books make it onto your reading list, I hope that understanding what I've been reading will give some insight into some of the topics on my mind. Please let me know if there are any books that you've read recently that you think I would enjoy!

Our Portrait of a Graduate statement defines the major skills and habits of thought that we seek to develop within each student by the time that he or she graduates from the Academy. The "Portrait of a Graduate" is used in conjunction with our mission statement and our core values to define the desired outcomes of an MA education.
