English as a Second Language (ESL) Support

The Montgomery Academy values cultural diversity and the contributions of students who may not be proficient in English at the time of admission. When an ESL student joins the learning community, the student's specific needs are assessed to determine the level of support needed for reaching academic success. The initial evaluation and ongoing observation of academic achievement by the student's teachers will allow the most effective individual plan for support to develop.

The Academy has three faculty members who are ESL trained and certified. One has specific time designated during the school day, and the other two can be available before or after school when needed to help students. Based on individual needs, ESL students may meet daily during their study hall for support on understanding assignments and creating appropriate strategies for approaching school work. Sometimes students can succeed with less frequent support or work successfully with peer tutors, but sometimes it will be necessary to temporarily secure an outside tutor for additional English support. When additional outside help is required, the Academy can facilitate securing qualified help to maximize the academic progress as the student becomes more proficient in English.

We believe that strong relationships between parents and school will enhance the success of the transition period for all ESL students. The ultimate goal of the ESL support is to remove the language barriers to the education offered at The Montgomery Academy.
