iPad Program Overview

The Academy has always considered technology to be an integral part of a well-rounded approach to student learning. In keeping with this tradition, we are announcing that each 5th-12th grade student will be required to own an iPad 2 (or later model) for everyday classroom use, beginning with the 2013-2014 school year (a year and a half from now). As the first phase of this program the Academy will provide each rising 5th grade student access to an Academy-owned iPad for the coming school year (2012-2013). The Academy has already begun providing iPads and professional development to our faculty in preparation for the full implementation.

Upon full incorporation, iPads will be used in all classrooms to support traditional methods of instruction as appropriate, and will provide teachers, coaches, and staff who support them a vehicle to present information to students in a way that is more relevant to their daily lives than has ever been possible before. Teachers will be able to incorporate multimedia content with ease. Students will be able to have access to relevant resources (both online and downloaded from class websites) at any time of day or night. In addition to academic resources, iPads will provide the capibility to support athletics and other co-curricular programs. Students in every discipline will be able to produce their own multimedia–and traditional–content on a platform that is the same for every student and in every class.

The Academy has determined that iPads offer the best, most consistent platform for use by students at any grade level. Its available tools (educational apps by the thousands, free access to primary, secondary, and collegiate tutorials through iTunes U, Kahn Academy, and other similar online resources, and a robust, secure operating system with available network management schemes) made it the first choice for our adoption.

Students will keep assignments organized, take notes in written, typed, and audio or video formats, produce written and multimedia content for classes, read e-books, be able to access resource materials from the Internet and teacher-produced references, and collaborate easily with both teachers and other students in the learning process.

We’re excited about the addition of iPads to the Academy’s instructional tools, and look forward to making their adoption a great experience for teachers, students and parents alike.
