Summary of the Position:

The Upper School Director is charged with the comprehensive responsibility for all activities of students and faculty in the division made up of grades nine through twelve. Reporting to the Head of School, the Director is supported by an Upper School Dean of Students, a Director of College Advising, a divisional guidance counselor, a registrar, a divisional assistant, and department chairs. As a member of the senior leadership team of the school, the Director collaborates to guide the entire school’s programs and activities.

The Upper School Director’s responsibilities include:

  • Leading the education for 250 Upper School students
  • Managing day-to-day operations of the division and the activities of its faculty and students
  • Fostering an active, open, innovative, collaborative academic environment
  • Communicating and interacting effectively with parents & students
  • Observing and evaluating faculty to encourage professional growth
  • Maintaining continued faculty excellence through support of faculty professional development
  • Working with the Upper School Academic Policy Committee to engage in research and review of academic practices and policies
  • Supervising the College Advising Office
  • Managing divisional budgets and expenditures
  • Teaching a class in the Upper School, as appropriate

The Upper School Director also:

  • Serves as a trusted advisor to the Head of School as part of the senior leadership of the school
  • Attends Board of Trustee meetings as requested by the Head of School
  • Serves as the advocate and support for the Upper School faculty
  • Fosters a school environment that furthers the school’s mission of pursuing excellence
  • Serves as an example-for students and the community-of adherence to the school’s ideals by demonstrating integrity, honor, discipline, energy, and enthusiasm
  • Grows and nurtures cohesiveness and trust in the Upper School
  • Understands and supports the Academy’s Honor Code
  • Maintains a visible supportive presence in the school’s wide variety of co-curricular activities

Performance Objectives:

The current Upper Director is returning to the role as Associate Head of School to focus on the implementation of a strategic plan that will be adopted during this school year. MA seeks its next leader of this division to build on a foundation of excellence with the partnership of an outstanding faculty. Specifically, the next Upper School Director will work with the administration and faculty on making progress in the following areas:

  • Developing a community understanding of a portrait of an MA graduate
  • Aligning our curricula vertically with other divisions of the school
  • Continuing to promote professional development and the adoption of best practices in teaching

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Strong academic preparation
  • Experience as both a classroom teacher and school administrator, preferably in an academic leadership role
  • The ability to facilitate effective interactions among members of the faculty and administrative team
  • Desire to build authentic relationships with a wide constituency
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • The willingness to be accessible and visible
  • High energy, enthusiasm, and unquestioned integrity
  • Loyalty to the institution and the mission of the school
  • A love of young people and working with their parents
  • A positive approach to hard work and collaborative problem solving
